If you’re a true goth freak, sporting your accessories, outfits, etc is more than just keeping them in your closet. You want to make sure you keep your stuff in top condition for when others can see it. Because that’s really the whole point, right? While sitting in your living room admiring your skulls can be nice, the real point is to get out in the world and show everyone who you are. And this takes work.
Don’t worry; it’s all perfectly manageable if you think about what you have to do beforehand and buy the necessary items. Let’s now take a look at several things you can do to keep your skulls shiny, your dresses in order, and everything else necessary to maintain the perfect look.
Manage your skulls
If there’s one item that truly epitomizes the goth look, it is the skull. If you’ve got silver jewelry, be sure to polish it on at least a yearly basis. In all likelihood your skulls are of varying sizes and have a lot of nooks and crannies in them. Therefore, you should consider getting instruments of different sizes – maybe even makeup applicators – to apply your polish with greater ease. After all, you don’t want your silver turning completely black, lest those creepy eyes get lost in the shadows.
You also want to make sure you’ve got adequate places to store them. If you’ve got a range of skull earrings (nose rings, etc), for example, why not go out and buy an earring tree to keep them on? It would also be a cool way to keep track of what you have. If you’ve got different sizes, colors etc you can line them up in order and have an easy way to choose what you want to wear on a daily basis.
Take care of your vehicle, motorcycle, etc
If you’ve picked out the perfect car to complement your dark look, you want to make sure you take care of it on a regular basis, too. If you’ve really got a top-of-the-line car, you might want to look into car wrapping to help keep it in top condition, especially if you only pull it out on special occasions. Say you’ve picked out the sleekest black you could find. You want it to be fully clear of streaks and scratches, right? Well, this takes some work.
When you are ready to take your car out for a ride, make sure that it is ready to be seen. Think about using some car polish or taking it to the car wash to make sure that it hasn’t accidentally been exposed to the elements too much. Or perhaps you need to vacuum the interior after going through one too many drive throughs!
And the same is true if you’ve got a motorcycle. There is a reason that Harley riders have formed worldwide clubs. The name is a badge of honor for owners, so it should be treated as such.
Don’t forget your clothes
Goth outfits are some of the most intricate out there. If you’ve got pieces (and you surely do) with lace, studs, etc, you want to be sure you preserve them so they maintain their original appearance as much as possible.
Think about getting garment bags for some of your more intricate pieces. Make a special effort to protect the delicate parts as much as possible. And when you’re handling lace, treat it with care. Even if you come back from parties after a few drinks, try to keep in mind that the form of your outfits is sacred
It’s worth the effort
It might seem like a lot of work, but you’ll be glad you did it. Take the time to look through your jewelry and other accessories on a regular basis, keep it clean, and get rid of anything that might have fallen apart. And take care of your car or motorcycle, too. Remember, being goth is not about being lax; it’s about maintaining the right look.
If you want to be a goth queen, there is maintenance involved. But if you do it right, everyone will be super impressed by you.
